A CONFESSED drug addict convicted of a break and enter was trying to move away from his violent, unstable past, a court heard yesterday.

Michael Glenworth Dawe, 26, of Kennedy Street, Singleton, told a sentencing hearing in Newcastle District Court that, while his big problem in life had been drugs, especially amphetamines, his priority now was to get a job.

He had enrolled in a welding course and was involved in a personal support program, the court heard.

Dawe pleaded guilty to a break and enter in which he and another man broke into an acquaintance's Singleton house on December 22, 2006, and demanded money.

Dawe's co-offender struck the man, momentarily knocking him out, and the pair fled with $290, personal papers, cards and a mobile phone.

The prosecutor said he was sceptical of Dawe's rehabilitation attempts.

Dawe will be sentenced on February 19.
